Step-by-step guide

How to Get a Forklift Licence in India

Your forklift licence (license) in four clear steps — from hands-on GESTA training and a video-recorded assessment to your Certificate of Competency and the RTO licence.

The forklift licence journey at a glance

Each step lights up in turn. Use the arrows to move through the steps at your own pace.

Step 1 of 4

Take GESTA training on your equipment

  • Choose the course for the exact equipment you will operate: counterbalance forklift, reach truck, battery-operated pallet truck (BOPT), stacker or order picker.
  • Classroom theory: load centre, stability, capacity plates, pre-use checks and site traffic rules.
  • Supervised hands-on practice on real equipment at our Ankleshwar training centre, guided by certified trainers.

Licence vs. certificate — what's the difference?

Certificate of Competency (GESTA)

Proves you were trained on a specific machine and passed a theory exam and a video-recorded practical assessment. It is what employers, safety officers and auditors check before letting you operate equipment on site — and it can be verified online by anyone.

Driving licence (RTO)

Issued by your state's Regional Transport Office. It is required to drive a forklift on public roads, and many employers ask for it alongside your certificate. Your certificate of competency supports the application.

The 4 steps in detail

Step 1

Take GESTA training on your equipment

Join a batch for the machine you will operate — forklift, reach truck, BOPT and more.

Step 2

Pass the theory & practical assessment

A theory exam plus a practical test on the machine, recorded on video as proof.

  • Theory exam on everything covered in training — available in English and several Indian languages.
  • Practical test on the equipment, observed and scored by an assessor against published criteria.
  • The practical assessment is video-recorded as objective evidence of your competence.
  • You must pass both the theory and the practical to move to the next step.

Step 3

Receive your Certificate of Competency

Once you pass, you're issued a certificate with a unique, verifiable number.

  • Your certificate is issued after a formal certification decision, made by someone independent of your trainer and assessor.
  • It names the equipment/course you were assessed on and shows its validity period.
  • Every certificate has a unique number that any employer or authority can verify online at gesta.in/verify.

Step 4

Apply at your nearest RTO for the licence

Apply for the relevant licence class and show your certificate as proof of competency.

  • Apply online on the Parivahan Sarathi portal and book a slot at your nearest RTO.
  • Choose the licence class your state RTO uses for forklifts — confirm the exact class with the RTO.
  • Submit your GESTA Certificate of Competency as proof of training and competency, with your ID, address and age proof.
  • Complete the RTO's verification and test to receive your licence.

Documents to carry to the RTO

Requirements vary by state — always confirm the list with your RTO before your visit.

  • Proof of identity (Aadhaar, passport, PAN or voter ID)
  • Proof of address
  • Proof of age (at least 18 years)
  • Recent passport-size photographs
  • Medical certificate, if your RTO asks for one
  • GESTA Certificate of Competency (proof of training and competency)

Forklift licence FAQs

Is a forklift licence mandatory in India?

To drive a forklift on a public road you need a valid driving licence of the class your state RTO prescribes. Inside factories and warehouses, employers and safety rules require that operators are trained and competent — a certificate of competency is the usual proof. Many employers ask for both.

Is the GESTA certificate the same as a government forklift licence?

No. The GESTA Certificate of Competency proves you were trained and passed a theory exam and a recorded practical assessment. The driving licence itself is issued only by the RTO. Your certificate supports your RTO application and is what most employers check before hiring.

Can I get a forklift licence online?

You can start the RTO application online through the Parivahan Sarathi portal, but you must visit the RTO for verification and any test. Training and the practical assessment cannot be done online — they need hands-on time on the machine.

How long does it take to get a forklift licence in India?

Training takes the number of days shown on your course page, and your certificate is issued after you pass both assessments. The RTO part depends on your state — most RTOs issue a learner's licence first, with the permanent licence after the waiting period and test.

What is the minimum age for a forklift licence?

You must be at least 18 years old to apply for a driving licence in India.

Does one certificate cover forklift, reach truck and BOPT?

Each certificate names the equipment you were assessed on. If you will operate several types — for example a counterbalance forklift and a reach truck — take the course for each one.

Can I use my certificate for forklift jobs in Dubai, Saudi Arabia or Qatar?

Gulf countries have their own operator licensing and third-party certification rules, so you may still need a local licence there. A verifiable training certificate strengthens your application — see our country standards pages for each country's requirements.
